Saturday, September 28, 2019 7:30pm

Durham-based modern dance choreographer Gaspard Louis and his company Gaspard&Dancers (G&D) will present a packed evening of dance September 27 and 28 at Duke University’s Reynolds Industries Theater—the company’s tenth annual concert at Duke. The evening-length program will feature the world premiere of Louis’ new work “Exit/No Entry”, inspired by the current U.S. policy on asylum seekers and its attendant humanitarian crisis.

Gaspard&Dancers (G&D) is a multiracial dance company with a mission to expand the creative potential of all who see and share in our work. The company was founded by former Pilobolus dancer Gaspard Louis in 2009 and is base in Durham. We collaborate with local musicians, visual artists and festivals. We feel very fortunate to have been a part Durham’s history for the past 9 years.

As Durham celebrating its 150th history, we hope to remain part of its future as we celebrate our 10th anniversary. We will present a new work inspired by the current U.S. political policy on asylum seekers on September 27 and 28 at Duke University’s Reynolds Theater. The program will include a free matinee performance for all children in the Durham school district.

On the Piazza Mentana stage "Pulses" (Pulsations), a suite composed for the occasion by Maestro Antonio Ciacca, with the participation of dancers from the Alvin Ailey school in New York, the Vivo Ballet Company of New York and the Yerakhavets Ballet Academy of Barcelona. The 8 movement composition crosses various aspects of Jazz dance from Tap Dance to contemporary dance born from the genius of Alvin Ailey. On stage the septet by Antonio Ciacca with, among others, the phenomenal MIchael Rorby with trombone.

Leaving and Coming Back is a collection of works Peter Stathas has created throughout his dance career. Stathas’ decision to combine old and new works in this special performance allows audiences to experience his choreography as it has evolved over the years.

Saturday Mornings tells the very personal story of the choreographer’s relationship with his grandfather who was a welterweight champion boxer. Duets features two pieces of work that he created–one entitled Five Studies for a Waiter and a Business Woman in 1985 and his 2018 premiere of Assuage. These pieces will be presented alongside Peter’s latest piece, Conundrum, which was conceived with the idea of specific spaces being used to represent others’ perceptions.
